Tour Provence with Travel Leisure Editor Luke Barr

May 05, 2014

YESâ?¦ Cox & Kings has indeed partnered up with Travel + Leisure to provide their guests and Travel +Leisure readers with a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience Provence through the eyes of Luke Barr, author of PROVENCE, 1970: M.F.K. Fisher, Julia Child, James Beard, & The Reinvention of American Taste. In his book, Barr told the story of the legendary December 1970 visit of Americaâ??s three leading culinary figures (James Beard, Richard Olney, & M.F.K. Fisher) to Julia & Paul Childâ??s home in the south of France. For those of you reading this post that arenâ??t familiar with Luke Barr, youâ??ll be thrilled to learn that Mr. Luke Barr (in addition to being a T&L editor) is the grand-nephew of none other than M.F.K. (Mary Frances Kennedy) Fisher who in addition to being a part of this illustrious quartet the book is mainly about, was also a distinguished food writer (27 Books, including a translation of The Physiology of Taste by Brillat-Savarin.), the founder of the Napa Valley Wine Library, and who also recorded the entire experience in 1970.

The highlights of the tour include exactly what you might think it would seeing youâ??ll be touring Nice, Grasse, Aix en Provence, and Arles (Saint Paul de Vence, the Matisse Museum, Picasso Museum, and Fragonard perfume workshop); however, what makes this trip special among other highpoints is a visit to the farmerâ??s markets, bakeries, and charcuteries described in the book, including those where Julia Child once shopped. Youâ??ll also have lunch prepared in Moulin de Mougins garden, experience a Provençal cooking class at La Pitchoune, on Simone Beck's former estate, tastings at two vineyards, including Domaine Tempier, followed by a sommelier-led wine dinner in Aix-en-Provence, Olive oil and wine tastings, a tour of Roman sites and the Les Halles market, and dinner at the iconic Hiely Lucullus, in Arles.
