We're all aware that there's luxury ways to travel on an airplane or a cruise ship, but what about a train? A rail journey doesn't have to be uncomfortable or stifling. For a different kind of train ride, check out some of the best new luxury train journeys below.

Shongololo Express, South Africa
Those in South Africa can enjoy this 19 car train journey that's known for it's cream and green paint. Riders can choose from a 12 or 15 day safari itinerary that will take them to places like Cape town, Namibia and Zimbabwe. On board there's a renovated dining car plus an observation car.


Belmond Andean Explorer, Peru
One of the most interesting things about this journey is that it takes passengers on one of the highest altitude train rides of almost any other train. It can accommodate only 48 passengers, which allows for an intimate experience. The interior of the train is inspired by the mountains and hand woven textiles that are local to the region. Travelers can enjoy dishes that have been created by the chefs at the Belmond Hotel Monasterio. Train journeys take passengers through destinations like Cusco, Lake Titicaca and Arequipa.


Belmond Grand Hibernian, Ireland
Those who love the architecture in Dublin will be in awe of this train. Much of the interior is modeled after it along with some colorful accents. Train journeys vary anywhere from two to six days and travelers may get to explore both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. This is great for travelers who want a quick vacation, but aren't able to get away for a long period of time. Some itineraries include stops at Blarney Castle & Gardens and Jameson's whiskey distillery.

The mastermind behind the train design was Ken Kiyoyuki Okuyama, who's worked for a variety of luxury car companies including Ferrari, Maserati and Porsche. The train has 17 different suites that have lacquered walls. There are also observation cars that allow for a panoramic view. The cuisine onboard was created by Michelin starred chef, Katsuhiro Nakamura. Travelers can choose 1-3 night journeys that tour the northeast region of Japan.


Jodhpur Express, Rajasthan
This train has been described as a palace on wheels. Travelers can choose from itineraries that range from 3 to 7 nights that includes destinations like Jaipur and Delhi. There are two fine dining cars onboard that have a variety of cuisines that includes everything from vegan to gluten free options. There are 4 different types of cabins including a presidential suite that includes a living room and complimentary mini-bar.
